Our design and build team was engaged to transform JD Gyms Wigan into a modern, high-performance training environment that enhances member experience and maximises gym capacity. The project focused on opening up the floorplan, increasing functional and freeweight areas, and creating visually striking zones that reflect contemporary gym design.

A key element of the refurbishment was removing the old spin room and converting it into a dedicated squatting zone with eight half racks and durable rubber flooring. Large dividing walls were removed across the gym to open up the space, expanding the freeweights area and improving user flow. New rubber flooring throughout the strength areas and new carpets across circulation zones were installed to deliver a functional yet high-quality finish.

We redesigned the lighting system to enhance visibility and atmosphere across all zones. Feature walls were introduced, including faux living walls with real neon signage, which were carefully integrated with the gym’s fire alarm system due to safety considerations. The main gym floor was upgraded with new bag drop lockers for convenient storage and organisation.

In the functional training areas, we installed a turf-style prowler/sled track on the ground floor to support high-intensity training. The mezzanine’s former “Burn” section was reconfigured into a hybrid zone, complete with a new throwing wall and an additional black-and-white prowler track supplied by Primal Fitness. This created a flexible, multi-use area that accommodates diverse training styles.

A dedicated glute zone was created with dynamic Tron-style lighting and timber slats, providing a visually defined space for targeted training. All new squat racks feature halo mirrors to enhance lighting, improve form visibility, and contribute to the modern, performance-focused aesthetic. Each zone was carefully designed to balance visual impact, functionality, and safety.
The result is a fully modernised, high-performance gym that supports a wide variety of training methods, maximises usable space, and elevates the member experience. From functional zones and freeweight expansions to bespoke lighting and feature walls, this project demonstrates our capability to deliver high-quality, design-led gym refurbishments that meet both operator and user expectations.
