Re-Purpose
By utilising and adapting existing facilities we were able to deliver this project in line with the clients goals, a space that was fit for purpose whilst minimising waste.

By infilling the existing pool to make way for a new ladies only area – one of NRG’s USP’s, although challenging made a once un-usable space pay for itself.

Design business interiors were brought on from the initial lease negotiation stage, allowing us to provide a full design and build package.
NRG Newcastle represents one of the largest and most diverse commercial gym environments in the region, spanning approximately 35,000–45,000 sq ft of functional training, strength, cardio and studio space. From a design and build perspective, the project demonstrates how a large urban fitness facility can be configured to support heavy footfall, a wide range of training styles and a 24/7 operational model. The scale of the open floor area provided the foundation for clear zoning, strong user flow and the integration of multiple specialist environments under one roof.
A key part of the layout strategy involved dividing the gym into distinct training zones while maintaining visual connectivity across the floor. Dedicated spaces were created for strength and conditioning, Olympic lifting, functional training, cardio, studio classes, and a female-only zone. This approach ensures each user type has a clearly defined area, reducing congestion and creating a more intuitive experience for members. The zoning is supported by durable flooring specifications tailored to impact, noise control and equipment demands.
The project also places emphasis on atmosphere and user engagement. Intelligent lighting design enhances the training environment, improves safety and creates smooth transitions between high-energy spaces and quieter recovery areas. The equipment strategy centres on reputable suppliers, ensuring reliability, consistency and longevity across both the strength and cardio suites. This level of investment aligns with the operator’s goal of delivering a premium, club-style offering rather than a basic budget facility.
To support continuous 24-hour operation, careful consideration was given to M&E infrastructure, including ventilation, air-conditioning, power distribution and data. These systems are designed to perform reliably under high usage while maintaining comfort and air quality throughout the day. The inclusion of male and female infrared saunas introduces a wellness element, requiring additional planning for plumbing, moisture control and heat management. These spaces help broaden the appeal of the facility and enhance the overall member experience.
Operational flow was another major design driver. NRG Newcastle accommodates significant peak-time traffic, so circulation routes, equipment spacing and locker-room design were developed to absorb heavy usage without compromising safety or usability. Materials and finishes were selected for durability and ease of maintenance, allowing the facility to remain clean and operational even during busy hours. The female-only zone also reflects a growing demand for inclusive environments, adding value for users who prefer a private or more comfortable training setting.
Overall, the NRG Newcastle project demonstrates how thoughtful planning, strong zoning and robust infrastructure can transform a large commercial building into a high-performing gym environment. From premium equipment and functional design to wellness spaces and 24/7 usability, the facility showcases the kind of versatility and quality that modern gym operators aim for. It stands as a strong example of how a well-executed design and build approach can support business growth, improve member satisfaction and accommodate a wide demographic of users.
