JD Gyms – Derby
Reconfiguring Space and Reinforcing Brand Consistency
Targeted Refurbishment with Minimal Disruption
The project was delivered through a focused design and build approach, reworking key zones within a live gym environment to enhance performance, durability, and member experience.
Future-Proofed Materials & Specification
Upgraded finishes and lighting solutions were selected to ensure longevity, resilience, and ease of maintenance in high-impact training areas.
Clarity of Zoning & Visual Connectivity
Strategic reconfiguration improved sightlines, wayfinding, and spatial legibility, allowing members to intuitively understand and navigate the gym.
The JD Gyms Derby project comprised a targeted redesign and refurbishment of a 28,000 sq ft facility, focusing on spatial optimisation, improved durability, and enhanced lighting while maintaining brand cohesion across the JD Gyms estate. The works were carefully sequenced to modernise key training zones and improve the overall user experience without unnecessary structural intervention.

A former spin studio was repurposed into a new glute-focused training zone, creating a dedicated space aligned with evolving member demand. This area was visually elevated through the introduction of timber oak-effect wall panelling, delivering warmth and contrast against the gym’s industrial aesthetic. To ensure long-term performance, the wall finish specification was upgraded to a wipeable architectural-grade vinyl with a solid plastic core, replacing traditional foam-backed systems that are prone to damage from equipment impact.

Lighting played a central role in defining this new zone. Square TRON lights were installed to provide even, consistent illumination across the space, while halo mirrors introduced soft, indirect lighting where precision and visual comfort were required. This combination ensured both functional performance and a premium aesthetic, particularly in strength-focused training environments.

Within the cardio area, a new neon feature was installed against a living wall backdrop, providing subtle indirect lighting while reinforcing a recognisable JD Gyms design language seen across multiple locations. This traditional yet impactful feature maintains visual consistency across the brand portfolio while elevating the ambience of the space.

Significant reconfiguration took place within the main gym floor. A new functional training zone was created by relocating the entire free weights section into the former “BURN” studio location. The existing mesh wall that previously enclosed the BURN area was removed, allowing the free weights zone to expand and significantly improving visibility and openness throughout the gym. Feature TRON chevron arrows were installed above the dumbbell areas, angled subtly downward to clearly define the zone without reliance on excessive signage.
Further improvements included the relocation of the prowler track, enabling the cardio area to expand into its former footprint. This strategic move resulted in clear, uninterrupted sightlines from the entrance across the full breadth of the gym, allowing members to immediately identify and locate each training zone. New rubber flooring was installed throughout the expanded free weights area, providing the durability and performance required for high-impact use and ensuring the facility is equipped to operate at peak performance for many years to come.
